February 4, 1941: Born in Amsterdam, of German parents.

1960: Abitur, Gymnasium, Krefeld, Germany

1962-1969: Studies at the Dominican Faculties of Theology and Philosophy, Le Saulchoir, at Essonnes, France; and intermittent graduate work at the universities of Munich and Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.

1969: Masters degree and Lectorate from Le Saulchoir.

1970: Ordained priest.

1971: Diploma from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris; Doctorat du Troisième Cycle in Philosophy from the Sorbonne, Paris.

1972: Publication of Maître Eckhart ou la joie errante.

1971-1972: Teaches philosophy at the Catholic University of America.

1972-1975: Teaches philosophy at Duquesne University.

1975: Leaves the priesthood, and begins teaching at the New School for Social Research, where he will stay until his death.

1976: Publication of Les Origines. The book is awarded the Broquette-Gonin prize by the Académie Française.

1980: Tenured by the New School for Social research.

1981: Doctorat d'Etat ès Lettres et Sciences Humaines from the Sorbonne, Paris.

1982: Publication of Le Principe d'anarchie: Heidegger et la question de l'agir.

1987: Naturalized American.

1988: Heidegger on Being and Acting, the English translation of Le Principe d'anarchie, is chosen as Outstanding Academic Book for 1987-88 by Choice magazine.
1992: Awarded the "Scholar's Session" of the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy.

August 20, 1993: Dies of AIDS in New York City.
