"Literature in Translation: Greek Tragedy"
Drew University, Fall 2005COURSE DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to understanding Greek Tragedy in its philosophical, religious, literary aspects. Brief mention will be made of the various sociological aspects of Greek Tragedy, such as its role in Athenian society and women's role in politics. Greater emphasis will be placed on the lasting relevance of Greek Tragedy to us.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- To appreciate the distinctive intellectual contributions of Ancient Greece.
- To interpret, analyze and critique major tragedians of this tradition.
- To be able to recognize a tragedy in terms of its tradition and analyze its cognitive, political and ethical implications.
- Application of philosophical arguments as they arise in these texts to contemporary problems.
